KYMI

Kymi is a beautiful town in the centre of Evia that combines the natural beauty of the mountains and sea and serves as starting point for excursions to interesting sights nearby.

The « balcony of Aegean » as the locals call Kymi, is a beautiful city that boasts one of the biggest artificial harbours of the country, dense vegetation, and beautiful beaches that beckon you to discover themin a rented car.

The special architecture of the houses has withstood the test of time and kept many elements from the rich historical past of region, with old renovated houses and mansions that impress tourists with their elaborate wrought iron balconies, the corbels (under the balconies), the dedication plaques and many others. The most distinguished buildings are Town Hall, the Folklore Museum and the old mansion of the Karavopouloufamily.

At the Folklore Museum of Kymi which is considered to be one of the best of its kind,visitors can admire unique handicrafts, mainly loom woven textiles and embroideries from Kymi’s great economic prosperity in the 19th century, as well as a wide range of local costumes and various traditional utensils. The basement houses the candle-making room, the laundry room, and the traditional cellar along with the agricultural tools of the time.

Kymi is the birthplace of the world renowned doctor Georgios Papanikolaoy who developed the Pap test for cervical cancer. One can visit the house where the doctor was born (1883) and raised which was preserved and restored to its original state.

On the Eastern coast of Kymi you will find Soytsini Beach surrounded by marvellous pine trees. Kymi Beach has fine sand, while Platana Beach has small pebbles. Located nearby are the beaches of Orifice, Ai Giorgi and Moyrteris, with their immense sandy beaches. North of Kymi one can find the virgin gulfs Tsilaro and Thapsa with their small pebble beaches and the beach of Metochi.

The beaches are all clean with crystal-clear waters, while certain ones are known as «kalamaromanes» because of the squid that is caughtthere. In the region surrounding Kymi, one can follow many «green» routes with a rental car such as the drive between Vitalo and Metochito visit traditional settlements (i.e. Maletianoi 5 km south-west ofKymi), while from the harbour you can take a ferry across to the beautiful island of Skyros. Kymi is located about 180 km from Athens airport and 85 km from Halkida passing by the towns of Vasiliko, Eretria, Amaryntho and Aliveri. From Karystos, it is 94 km, 66 km from Styra and 87 km from Marmari.
